My Vision for Human-Centered AI

When I came to the United States at 16, I never imagined I would help shape the future of artificial intelligence. My work has always been driven by curiosity about how machines can understand and augment human capabilities.

My path from China to Princeton to Stanford was filled with challenges, but each obstacle taught me the importance of perseverance and the power of education. These experiences shaped my belief that AI should be developed with diverse perspectives and for the benefit of all people.

The creation of ImageNet was a pivotal moment in computer vision. By providing a large-scale dataset, we enabled breakthroughs in deep learning that transformed AI research. But for me, this was never just about technical achievement—it was about giving machines the ability to see and understand our world.

"The most important part of AI is human-centered AI—AI that's grounded in human needs and that augments human abilities."

Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI

As co-director of Stanford HAI, my mission is to advance AI research, education, policy and practice to improve the human condition. We bring together interdisciplinary researchers to develop AI technologies inspired by human intelligence and guided by human values.
